Rock Bands I Adore!

Being a Caribbean girl, I always prided myself on knowing the hottest dancehall and reggae music hitting the charts and doing the baddest dance moves touching the streets but recently I decided to expand my musical tastes, beyond my preferred niche, to other genres.  That’s when I stumbled across some songs (and videos) that I have come to treasure and they may not be the best hits of all time but they are certainly my favourites.  Take the first song for example

Heart – Alone

Apart from the melodious voices of these two vixens that is at the height of perfection I like the personality that shines through showing a mix of both gothic and rock.  The blond chick is my definite favourite especially at 2:41 where she just absolutely rocks the stage and the guitar like a proper professional.  The chorus is absolute genius, picking up spectacular momentum after the verse skillfully pulls you into the tune.  It is no surprise that this is one of my favourites lol.

Bon Jovi – Bed of Roses

Bon Jovi is confirmation of why I have always loved a man with long hair, rugged looks and a pierced ear lobe.  However, as if that isn’t enough, he also adds an incredible voice to a package of unmitigated masculine beauty.  Yeah….that’s how much I love him and this song and I will definitely have no problem with him ‘laying me down on a bed of roses’ lol.  The best parts to this video is the first few minutes of the intro and the footage of him performing live.  Although not keen on the snake-looking outfit in the live performance, I definitely loved the energy that seemed to ooze from his every pore on stage. His voice is undoubtedly one of the best that I have heard in a long time.  I sometimes wish that X factor and American Idol would produce this type of talent but until then I will continue to watch this video and listen to this song with a grin of complete and utter satisfaction splashed across my face.

Metallica – Nothing Else Matters

Well after that incredible feedback on Bon Jovi, you would think that I have exhausted all the praise that I could possibly give.  Fortunately I haven’t.  To tell you the truth, when I first heard this song it didn’t leave much of an impression on me but then after listening to it fully, I decided that it was a definite keeper.  I don’t know if it’s because I envisioned it being an undeniably fantastic soundtrack for drama, action or even romantic films.  Whatever the reason for me loving this song, I can’t deny that the voice is something different, the lyrics are interesting, the stage presence incredible and guitar playing absolutely brilliant.  With the energy that absolutely spills over into the audience, much less a viewer like me that wasn’t even at the concert, I can’t help but see why rock bands so easily attract groupies.

Bob Marley and the Wailers – Concrete Jungle

Well this may not necessarily qualify as a rock band but it would be a huge injustice if I failed to mention Bob Marley and the Wailers especially given my Caribbean roots.  This song spoke volumes to me when I first heard it during my youth and even now it still proves to be relevant to those of us that have been forcefully displaced, by financial circumstances, to live in cities or even to migrate to other countries.  Thinking back to the wonderful sun, sand and beach that I have decided to trade for the cold unfeeling metropolitan surroundings of London, I can’t help but agree with Bob Marley and his witty description of what is precisely a ‘Concrete Jungle’

Guns N Roses – Sweet Child O’ Mine

I must admit that when I first saw this I thought that the singer was either drunk, high or simply enjoyed (what quickly became apparent) was his trademark dance.  It’s no surprise that I wasn’t keen on his moves and even moreso his very nasal vocals but the song is definitely upbeat with stunning guitar playing which led me to making this another rock band ‘keeper’.

Bon Jovi – Always

“And I will love you…baby…..Aaaallllwwwaayyyssss” Wow – it would seem as if I have joined the Bon Jovi fan club but the truth is that this artiste has managed to do quite a few songs that I can’t help but love.  I must admit that the video had me lost at the end with the building exploding after being set on fire but overall it was an interesting plot that wasn’t too difficult to follow.  Incredible vocals and wonderful lyrics.  I have listened to this song countless times and I don’t think I will ever grow tired of it.  Kudos to Bon Jovi for producing this song, which seems to get better with time.

Well obviously this list hasn’t been exhausted but this is just a few songs that I thought would be worth mentioning.  Stay tuned to my upcoming blog about some of the greatest soul songs which are an all time favourite……
